The current tower was dedicated in 1960, has
been renovated at least once
and is showing signs of age because of harsh
weather conditions.
The new tower will only be a third as tall, but will be handicapped accessible.
The remains of Rev. Elisha Mitchell lie at rest at the foot of the tower.
